Renewing your identity documents: Choose the right time to do it!

ANTS / Communication department
Is your identity card or passport about to expire and you're planning to travel abroad or take an exam? Check the validity of your identity documents now, and don't wait until the last minute to renew them.

As holiday periods and exams approach, applications for national identity cards and passports tend to increase. By renewing your identity documents early, you can speed up the issuing process and avoid bottlenecks!

We strongly recommend that you start the process of renewing your documents by making an appointment with municipal services at least six months before the expiry date of your document, particularly if:

  • you're planning a trip in the near future
  • one of your children is going on a school trip
  • you’re a student or are taking an exam requiring that you show a valid identity document

That way, you'll be sure to have a current document when you need it!

New! An appointment search engine is available to make it easier for you to book a time at your local government offices to file an initial application or renew your identity documents. To access it, go to the ANTS website.

Please note: It is possible to renew your identity card or passport, but it is not compulsory to do so if you are changing your address or preferred name. You can hold off on renewing your documents if one of these situations applies to you but the validity date of your document has not passed.

Our advice: Submitting a pre-application online considerably speeds up the time it takes for your file to be in order at the receiving office. Although this formality is not compulsory, it is strongly recommended as it facilitates the procedure for issuing the document.

Click on the link below for the pre-application form via the online platform of the Agence Nationale des Titres Sécurisés (ANTS).
