French Elections 2026: appointing a proxy to vote made easy with France Identité
Première publication le March 6, 2026
With French local elections taking place on 15 and 22 March 2026, appointing a proxy to vote has never been easier. The French Ministry for the Interior recently made 100% digital proxy voting the norm for all elections using France Identité.
To benefit from this 100% online procedure, you just need to have the new credit card-sized ID card and certified digital identity. It only takes a few minutes to obtain this certification:
- download the France Identité app to your smartphone;
- launch a request for certification via the app;
- confirm your information and scan your ID card using NFC;
- go to your town hall with your smartphone, your ID card and the QR code generated.
Once your identity has been confirmed, you can appoint or terminate a proxy directly on Maprocuration.gouv.fr, without needing to go to your local police station or gendarmerie.
Citizens who still have an old-format ID card that has not yet expired can now apply for free renewal to obtain a credit card-sized ID card to use France Identité. To do this, you must pre-apply on the passeport.ants.gouv.fr site and be able to return your old ID card when you collect your new one.
This improvement, already successfully tested during the 2024 European and general elections, makes it much easier to vote. Why wait: certify your France Identité digital identity and get your proxy ready now.
Download the France Identité app and discover all its uses on france-identite.gouv.fr.
