France Identité is continuing to develop and now adds a new practical use. Travellers can now show their digital French national identity card via the France Identité app when checking in hold luggage and boarding flights operated at French airports.

This development is part of the new regulatory provisions allowing the use of France Identité digital identity as proof of identity during checks carried out by airlines. It marks a new step forward in modernizing public services and simplifying procedures for users.

A simplified travel experience

Until now, travellers had to show a paper-version identification document when checking in hold luggage and boarding.

Now, thanks to the France Identité app, they can show their digital French national identity card (front side), which contains the information required to check their identity (first name, last name and photo), and only this information, without disclosing any other personal data.

This new use complements the features already offered by France Identité, namely identity checking and the right to travel (travel ticket checks) on-board French (SNCF) trains, access to digital documents (driving licence and vehicle registration document) directly on smartphones and simplified access to online administrative procedures.

Projects that are part of a broader European vision of air travel

Other projects focusing on air travel are currently being carried out by France Titres within the European consortium APTITUDE. At the end of May 2026, a pilot run was coordinated by France Identité hand-in-hand with the border police at Marseille Provence Airport to imagine tomorrow's travel: a process where every user would be able to prove their identity quickly, securely and with complete confidence, directly on their smartphone to cross border checks in a simplified, secure way.

During this pilot run, a temporary version of France Identité enabled participants to import their passport data so that they could go through boarding checks and border checks using digital proof of identity.

Similar pilot runs are underway. The next step, in September 2026: France Identité and the other EU Digital Identity Wallets will take part in a pilot run with Geneva International Airport to make digital identity a tool that is acknowledged on a European and global scale.

France Identité, an everyday companion

With over 4.5 million users, France Identité continues to expand its range of uses to accompany French citizens in their daily lives.

After the digital driving licence and vehicle registration document, paperless proxy voting and travel ticket checks on-board French (SNCF) trains, the app now goes even further by accompanying travellers at airports.

As such, France Identité continues to pursue its ambition; to offer simple, secure, useful digital identity that is totally in line with everyday uses.
